Mangrove Snapper Biology & Identification

Mangrove snapper (Lutjanus griseus), also known as gray snapper, are a medium-sized member of the snapper family. They are identified by their reddish-gray to brownish coloration with a dark stripe from the snout through the eye. They have a pointed snout, large canine teeth, and a deeply forked tail. Juvenile mangrove snapper are commonly found in very shallow water, estuaries, mangroves, and even brackish water far inland. Adults move to deeper reef structure offshore as they grow. In Louisiana offshore waters, mangrove snapper are found from 60 to 300 feet around platforms, reefs, and wrecks. They are one of the most common snapper species encountered on half-day, full-day, and extended offshore trips.

Targeting Mangrove Snapper in Louisiana

Mangrove snapper are line-shy fish that require finesse tackle to fool consistently. Light fluorocarbon leaders (15–30 lb) on small 1/0 to 3/0 circle hooks with fresh cut bait — squid, shrimp, and cigar minnow — are most productive. Lighter jig heads with soft plastic paddletails or shrimp imitations also produce excellent catches. On offshore trips, mangrove snapper often share structure with red snapper and lane snapper. Their willingness to bite throughout the day makes them a reliable target when other species are slow. The peak bite for mangrove snapper occurs around structure during tide changes, early morning, and late afternoon. Their meat is fine-grained, white, and sweet — among the best eating of all Gulf snapper species.
